Attachment cycle (EFT-inspired)

Pursue / withdraw cycle mapping

What it is

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)–inspired tools help name pursue/withdraw cycles and soften reaches. Educational paraphrase only—not EFT therapy and not affiliated with ICEEFT.

When Mediate uses it

Available as an adaptive secondary when the fight looks like protest, reach, or abandon patterns rather than a practical chore dispute.

Key tools

Cycle map

Private channel / whisper

Name the cycle: pursue → withdraw → louder pursue → deeper withdraw. Externalize the cycle as the enemy.

Try saying…

Try: “When I chase, you shut down; when you shut down, I chase harder. The cycle is hurting us.”

Soften pursue

Usually a private whisper

Soft reach: fear and need under the protest.

Try saying…

Try: “I get loud because I’m scared we’re losing each other. I need a signal you’re still here.”

Soften withdraw

Usually a private whisper

Soft withdrawer: name overwhelm + offer a return time.

Try saying…

Try: “I’m shutting down because I’m flooded. I need 20 minutes, then I’ll come back.”

Patterns it watches for

  • Pursuer protest

Cues like: “why won't you talk”, “you always shut down”, “chase for answer”

  • Withdrawer shutdown

Cues like: “I need space”, “can't do this now”, “goes quiet”, “leaves room”

  • Negative cycle

Cues like: “same dance”, “I push you pull”, “we trigger each other”
