Motivational interviewing micro-skills
What it is
Motivational interviewing (MI) micro-skills (OARS) help elicit the speaker’s own reasons for change without arguing them into it.
When Mediate uses it
Light secondary skill when resistance is high and open questions / reflections beat scripts.
Key tools
OARS elicit
Private channel / whisperOpen question → Affirm → Reflect → Summarize. Elicit-provide-elicit for advice.
Try saying…
Ask: “What would good look like if this went 10% better?” Reflect their own words back.
Patterns it watches for
Ambivalence / stuck
Cues like: “I don't know”, “part of me wants”, “maybe later”, “what's the point”
Notes
Motivational interviewing micro-skills (OARS) paraphrased for facilitation; not a full MI course.
