NVC

NVC request language

Observation–feeling–need–request rehearsals

What it is

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) supplies the request-language layer: Observation, Feeling, Need, Request (OFNR). Mediate uses it to turn blame or vague pressure into clearer, doable asks—paraphrased themes inspired by publicly discussed NVC, not CNVC certification.

When Mediate uses it

NVC is a common secondary lens alongside Gottman. When a message sounds like judgment or a demand, the mediator may whisper an OFNR rewrite or a willingness-based ask. Jackal/blame naming stays private; Group never calls someone a “jackal.”

Key tools

OFNR rewrite

Usually a private whisper

Observation (camera facts) → Feeling → Need → clear Request (willingness-based).

Try saying…

Try saying: “When the trash sat overnight (O), I felt tense (F). I need reliability (N). Would you be willing to take it out before bed tonight (R)?”

Willingness request

Usually a private whisper

Convert demands to willingness-based asks that allow no.

Try saying…

Swap “You have to…” for “Would you be willing…? If not, what would work?”

Patterns it watches for

  • Jackal / blame language

Cues like: “you make me”, “should”, “always/never moralizing”, “you're selfish”

  • Demand energy

Cues like: “you have to”, “or else”, “no choice”, “just do it”

  • Vague need / no ask

Cues like: “you should know”, “if you cared”, “figure it out”
