Acceptance + change (IBCT-inspired)

Acceptance and change agreements

What it is

Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT)–inspired frames balance acceptance with concrete change agreements. Not a clinical protocol.

When Mediate uses it

Useful when parties need both “I can live with this part” and a specific, negotiable change—not only soft start-ups.

Key tools

Acceptance bridge

Private channel / whisper

Empathic joining around the understandable pattern before asking for change.

Try saying…

Try: “Given your history, I get why you go quiet. AND I still need a return signal.”

Change agreement

May appear in Group

One small, measurable change agreement — not a personality overhaul.

Try saying…

Group: “This week, can we agree on one specific behavior each?”

Patterns it watches for

  • Change-only trap

Cues like: “you have to change”, “fix yourself”, “until you stop”

  • Fatalism

Cues like: “this is just who they are”, “never change”, “why bother”

Notes

Inspired by publicly discussed Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy acceptance/change themes; not a clinical protocol.
